With Grandmaster Flash at The Dance SF, Passionate Dancers Boogied for Eight Hours for Homeless Youth

It might have sounded like a crazy idea: forgo a precious lazy Saturday morning for eight hours of dancing for a cause? But as any marathon runner or AIDS/Life Cycle aficionado will tell you, it’s the extreme challenge that builds comradery and makes feats of strength so rewarding. As teams of decked-out dancers began to boogie promptly at 9am on October 11th, it became clear that The Dance SF would be an unforgettable experience.

The idea for the dance marathon took root as we considered how we could create a unique event to support the homeless youth support services of one of our favorite nonprofit beneficiaries, At The Crossroads, while also building our network of supporters. The Project AMPLIFI community believes that music has tremendous power to motivate and connect, and we love to dance, so a dance marathon felt like exactly the right thing to do. Linking up with our co-producers at More SF, we pulled together a lineup of some of the Bay Area’s best DJ’s and dancers including Motown on Mondays DJs, Hitsville Soul Sisters, Non Stop Bhangra, J Boogie, Matt Haze with Dylan Germick of Planet Booty, DJ Pleasuremaker from Afrolicious, and Grandmaster Flash.

As Grandmaster Flash shared with XXL before the event, he was excited to participate in this event because of his own personal experience as a foster child. The services provided by At The Crossroads are essential to helping underserved youth find the drive and determination to succeed in life, despite the serious disadvantages of being homeless or in transition.

With 200 dancers and over $15,000 raised by dance marathoners, the Project AMPLIFI team is hugely grateful to our dozens of sponsors and vendors who made the event a feast for the senses. From the essential caffeine provided by Philz Coffee to the five delicious food trucks; from the killer T-shirts from Social Imprints to the abundant Clif Bars snacks; from the indefatigable staff at Mighty to the dance teachers keeping the teams motivated and dancing hard and Silent Frisco keeping the energy up outside: a huge community of talented people contributed to make The Dance SF an awesome experience.

·       If you didn’t get a T-Shirt at the event, we have a limited number of rockin’ The Dances SF T-Shirts available for $20 (plus shipping). Email us at info [at] if you would like to purchase a t-shirt and please provide your shirt size, male or female style, and your mailing address. We will invoice you through PayPal.
